Stoicism in Modern Day
Stoicism in Modern Day
Though we might call Stoicism an "ancient philosophy" - it isn't a philosophy in the modern sense of the word, where we're thinking about trolleys and spend our time "philosophizing" abstractly. Here, Stoicism wasn't an ancient philosophy, meaning it was a complete spiritual system to understanding and living life well.
Stoicism is meant to be a holistic system of living and being, not just something we pay attention to when we have our nose in a book for some minutes each night.
In modern day, without surviving Stoic schools and a Stoic lineage, it is strange to think about studying and practicing Stoicism. Unlike other contemplative traditions like Buddhism, the Yogic sciences, or western contemplatives, Stoicism doesn't have unbroken lineage of teachers. You won't find a local Stoic center in your city, a teacher to apprentice yourself to, or a formal community to practice with (but do seek out informal meetup groups, you may find some of those).
With the death of Marcus Aurelius, the Stoic school more or less died, and today we have mere fragments (likely less than 1% of) what was probably thousands upon thousands of texts produced from the nearly 500 years of the school's living history.

Stoicism in 2025 is full of rampant misinformation, often the "bro-ification" of Stoicism... where a sweeping and profound philosophical and spiritual system is reduced to making money, picking up women, or succeeding in climbing the social ladder.
This project iams to imminently practical for our modern lives, while at the same time honoring the the fullness of the tradition in its depth, breadth, and complete view. Aspects of Stoic teaching classically taught separately (like Stoic Logic, Physics, and Ethics), may occasionally be brought forward as a unified embodied teaching. At times we may describe Stoic principles without using any Stoic language, and instead use a modern rephrasing to convey the underlying meaning. At other times we may indeed use traditional language and terminology that could feel anachronistic, or out of place in modern understanding.
This project approaches Stoicism from the perspective that the most important thing is to learn at the level of embodiment, and hope to make use of every tool in the arsenal translate, transmit, inform, and inspire.
